03 / A RICH HISTORY
A landscape
with depth.
Around 1680, the tile, brick and clay industries began to develop in Woerden. Demand for clay grew, and the broad banks of the Oude Rijn offered a rich source.
In 1717, the Commandery granted permission to excavate four morgen of farmland for clay used in tiles, bricks and roof tiles. This created a landscape of clay pits and water features.
Elsewhere, woodland later gave way to farmland; this wood remained. The high water table made farming difficult. Thus the Harmelen Vijverbos came into being in 1759. Over time, the pond took on its graceful curved shape.
